Things are leaning much more "Eagle Morning" than "Rye Storm" right now. Someday when we have a cold attic or garage, the real experiments will take place.Diving for Pearlshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02373371259792882112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3101162324715983722.post-22514993561333924252013-11-15T22:08:45.636-05:002013-11-15T22:08:45.636-05:00Unfortunately it's the water the angels are st...Unfortunately it's the water the angels are stealing, not the alcohol. The experiments' resulting whiskies are much hotter than the stuff poured in at the beginning. For instance, I'm betting The Rye Storm is in the upper 60s to lower 70s ABV-wise (it's insanely hot), and that started with Wry Moon which is only 46% ABV. While room temperature might be an issue, the warehouses in Kentucky get much hotter and humid than my place, so I'm still betting it's an issue with the barrel itself.

All that being said, I will be trying some rums to see how they may go with all the malted rye spice.Diving for Pearlshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02373371259792882112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3101162324715983722.post-20548678709998987222013-11-14T23:31:48.792-05:002013-11-14T23:31:48.792-05:00J. El Dorado 151 would be another good pick, though if you don't mind the extra cost, Lemon Hart 151 plays really well with rye.Jordanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06448702693643593156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3101162324715983722.post-51745367479270876272013-11-14T20:15:06.742-05:002013-11-14T20:15:06.742-05:00Give rum a try for the last refill. If ...All those rye barrels are going somewhere....

If I did it again with a new cask, I'd actually go with a lower % non-malted rye with the first go around. The intensity of the spices and spirit really did affect the second fill. I'm sure I'm learning this long after Lumsden did.

I know Angel's Envy has a rum-finished rye. The rye whiskeys made by the big Kentucky distillers are certainly closer to bourbon thanks to the amount of corn in their mashbills. It will be interesting to see an experiment between maturing in a 51% rye whiskey barrel and one that previously held 95% or 100% rye.Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13215982348779717643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3101162324715983722.post-25843847352844520192013-11-13T16:52:58.576-05:002013-11-13T16:52:58.576-05:00If you're interested in doing any more of thes...If you're interested in doing any more of these, I have a closet that goes under my staircase, it's consistently about 70 degrees in there and pitch black.
